Earth Science

Earth science is the study of our wonderful planet, Earth. It brings together many parts of science to learn how Earth works. Earth scientists look at everything from deep rocks to the air we breathe and the water we drink.

Earth science includes the study of Earth’s four main parts: the biosphere (all living things), the hydrosphere and cryosphere (water in all its forms, including ice), the atmosphere (the layer of gases around Earth), and the geosphere or lithosphere (the solid parts of Earth, like mountains and oceans).

Geology is one big part of Earth science. It looks at Earth’s structure, materials, and how our planet changes. Geology studies the lithosphere, which includes the Earth's crust and rocks. It shows how Earth’s surface changes because of energy from inside the planet.

Earth science is also a part of planetary science, which studies other planets, too. Learning about Earth helps us understand our world and how to take care of it. By studying Earth, scientists can learn about the past, present, and future of our amazing home.

Earth has layers, like an onion. The outer layer is called the crust. Under the crust is the mantle, which is warm and moves very slowly. This slow movement helps make mountains grow and can cause volcanoes. It also changes our planet’s surface over many, many years.

Atmospheric science studies Earth’s air and weather. It helps us know what the weather will be like. Scientists also look at how air affects our climate. Earth’s air has five layers, with most of the air in the lowest layer, called the troposphere. The air we breathe is mostly nitrogen and oxygen, which helps keep Earth warm and protects us.

Hydrology is the study of water on Earth. It looks at how water moves and how people use fresh water. This includes studying oceans, groundwater, and how water helps living things. Understanding water helps us protect our precious water resources.

Ecology studies how plants, animals, and humans live together on Earth. Ecologists look at how living things use air, water, and nutrients to grow and stay alive. They also study how our actions can change nature around us.
