Eggs as Food
Eggs are a special kind of food that people have eaten for thousands of years. The most common eggs we eat come from chickens. You can find chicken eggs in almost every grocery store around the world.
People also eat eggs from other birds, like ducks and ostriches. These eggs are bigger and sometimes taste a little different. In some countries, people enjoy eating fish eggs too. When we eat fish eggs, we call them roe or caviar.
Eggs are very useful in cooking. We can fry them, boil them, scramble them, or put them in baked goods like cakes and bread. Egg yolks help make foods thicker and smoother, while egg whites can be whipped to make fluffy desserts.
Eggs are also good for us because they have lots of protein. A medium chicken egg has about 70 tiny calories and 6 grams of protein. Most people can eat one egg a day without any problems for their hearts.
Eggs come in different shell colors, like white and brown. The color of the shell does not change how the egg tastes. Some farms even have eggs with blue or speckled shells!
In many cultures, eggs are important for special celebrations. During Easter, children often hunt for hidden, decorated eggs. People also decorate eggs in many colorful ways for fun and tradition.
