What is Food?

Food is something we eat to stay healthy and strong. It comes from plants, animals, and even some tiny living things. Foods have special things in them, like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. These help our bodies grow, give us energy, and keep us feeling good.

Where Does Food Come From?

People eat both plants and animals. We often cook our food before eating it. Most food grows on big farms or is made in factories. This helps us have enough food for everyone. But, making food sometimes uses things that can hurt our planet, like fossil fuels.

Different Kinds of Food

Food can be grouped in many ways. One common way is to put it into four groups: vegetables and fruit, cereals and bread, dairy, and meat. Other groups include fish, eggs, nuts, and even insects! The Food and Agriculture Organization helps make sure everyone has safe and enough food.

Fun Facts About Food

Animals have different ways to taste food. Humans have five main tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami. Some animals, like catfish, have many more taste buds than we do. Also, every animal’s body is made to digest the food it eats best. Cows have long digestive systems for plants, while lions have mouths made for tearing meat.
