Espírito Santo
Espírito Santo is a beautiful state in the southeastern part of Brazil. It has a long and lovely coastline with sandy beaches and important ports for trade. The capital city is Vitória, and the largest city is Serra.
The state has 78 different areas called municipalities. Vitória sits on an island close to cities like Vila Velha, Cariacica, and Serra. In the north, there is a place called Itaúnas in Conceição da Barra known for its sandy dunes and fun traditions.
People from Espírito Santo are called capixaba. This name might come from a word for “corn hair” because early settlers had blond hair, or it could refer to corn farmers since the area once had many corn fields.
Espírito Santo is named after the Christian Holy Ghost, also called the Holy Spirit. The state has many different landscapes, including coastal areas, lakes, forests, and mangroves. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Bahia to the north, Minas Gerais to the north and west, and Rio de Janeiro to the south.
The largest river in the state is the Doce River. Along the coast, the climate is tropical with dry winters and rainy summers. North of the Doce River, the climate is drier and hotter. In the mountains, the climate is cooler.
Espírito Santo is a wonderful place with a rich mix of people and cultures. It is known for its beautiful beaches, tasty food like Moqueca capixaba, and growing tourism. The state’s flag has three horizontal stripes—blue, white, and pink—with the words Trabalha e Confia meaning “Work and trust God.”
