Eureka, California

Eureka is a lovely city in California, right on the North Coast near Humboldt Bay. It is about 270 miles north of San Francisco. Eureka is the largest coastal city between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon.

Eureka has a special kind of weather called a maritime climate. The temperatures don’t change much. Winters are rainy, and summers are dry. The city is important for government, health care, trade, and the arts for the area north of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Long ago, Eureka was a busy place for the West Coast lumber trade. Today, visitors love to see the beautiful old Victorian buildings, like the famous Carson Mansion. Eureka is also home to California’s oldest zoo, the Sequoia Park Zoo.

A Little History

The Wiyot people lived in a place called Jaroujiji, now Eureka, for thousands of years. They were great at making baskets, and many of their baskets are shown at the Clarke Historical Museum in Old Town Eureka.

Eureka was founded on May 13, 1850. It was named using a Greek word meaning “I have found it!” which is also California’s state motto.

Things to See and Do

Eureka has many fun things to see and do. You can visit the Sequoia Park Zoo, where you can walk on a special path in the trees called the Sky Walk. The zoo has a big playground and a duck pond, too.

The city has a nice boardwalk along the waterfront. Halvorsen Park has a pretty path beside the water. You can also visit the Humboldt Botanical Garden or the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

Eureka holds many fun events each year, like the Kinetic sculpture race in May and the Redwood Coast Music Festival in October. There are also markets, parades, and festivals for many holidays.

A Cool Place to Live

Eureka is a cool place to live or visit. With its mild weather, beautiful old buildings, and many fun things to do, it’s no wonder people love this city. Whether you’re walking along the waterfront, visiting a museum, or watching a festival, Eureka has something for everyone!
