What Are Felidae?

Felidae is the special family name for all cats, big and small. These animals belong to a group called Carnivora, which means they love to eat meat. Cats can be found all around the world, from Africa to Europe, Asia, and even the Americas. They live in forests, mountains, and dry lands, and some are active during the night while others hunt during the day.

Cool Cat Facts

All cats, whether they are big like lions or small like house cats, have some amazing traits. They have special claws that they can stretch out and pull in to climb and play. Their bodies are strong and flexible, and their eyes shine in the dark because of a special layer that helps them see better. Cats also have whiskers that help them feel their way and catch their food.

There are many different kinds of cats, from spotted to striped, and they can be many colors, like white, black, and orange. Some cats, like tigers, are very large, while others, like the rusty-spotted cat, are quite small. Scientists study cats to learn more about how they live and how they have changed over millions of years.

Where Did Cats Come From?

The first cats lived a very long time ago, during a time called the Oligocene, about 25 million years back. They have changed and evolved into many different species since then. Today, scientists sort cats into two main groups: Pantherinae for the big cats like lions and tigers, and Felinae for the smaller cats like house cats and ocelots. By studying these cats, we learn how amazing and unique they are.
