Franklin D. Roosevelt
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, often called FDR, was the 32nd president of the United States. He was born on January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York, to a wealthy family. He grew up in a big home called Springwood and learned to ride horses and sail boats.
Roosevelt went to school in Groton, Massachusetts and later to Harvard College. He studied law but decided to work in politics instead. In 1903, he married Eleanor Roosevelt, and they had six children.
In 1910, Roosevelt was elected to the New York State Senate. He later became the assistant secretary of the Navy under President Woodrow Wilson. In 1921, he became ill and had trouble walking, but with help from his wife, he returned to public service. He was elected governor of New York in 1928.
In the 1932 presidential election, Roosevelt became president during a very difficult time called the Great Depression. He created programs like Social Security to help older people and those in need. His first 100 days in office were very busy, with new laws to help people find jobs and support farmers.
Roosevelt was known for speaking to people on the radio in what he called โfireside chatsโ. These talks helped people feel better during tough times.
When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Roosevelt led the United States into World War II. He worked with leaders from other countries to keep peace after the war and helped start the idea for the United Nations.
Roosevelt was re-elected three more times, making him the longest-serving president in U.S. history. Sadly, he passed away in 1945 while still in office. He is remembered for helping the United States through hard times and for his many important ideas.
