Fynbos
Fynbos is a special kind of shrubland found in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape parts of South Africa. It grows mostly along the coast and in the mountains. The weather there is warm and dry in summer and cool and wet in winter. This is called a Mediterranean climate.
Fynbos is very important for nature. Many plants grow only in this area. About 80% of the plants in the Cape floral kingdom are found here, and many of these plants grow nowhere else in the world.
The word fynbos means fine bush in Afrikaans. The plants often have tough, narrow leaves. Long ago, people used the word fynbosch for small patches of plants without big trees. By the mid-1900s, scientists started using fynbos for the special plants in the southwestern Cape of South Africa.
Fynbos is home to many special animals. There are seven birds that live only here, like the Cape rockjumper and Cape sugarbird. Many reptiles, frogs, and insects also make their home in fynbos.
People are working hard to protect fynbos. Some plants were thought to be lost, but they are growing again in places like Table Mountain. Researchers and community groups continue to care for these special areas.
