Giotto was a famous painter and architect from Florence in the Late Middle Ages. He lived from around 1267 until 1337, a time when art was changing and becoming more real.
One of Giotto’s most famous works is the decoration of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. He painted beautiful pictures on the walls showing stories from the lives of Virgin Mary and Jesus. These paintings are very important and many people think they are some of the best art from that time.
Giotto was also chosen to design a new bell tower for the Florence Cathedral. This tower is called Giotto's Campanile and it is still standing today. Giotto’s paintings made people see art in a new way because his people looked real and had feelings.
Giotto was born in a small farmhouse near Florence. As a young boy, he showed great talent for drawing. A famous artist named Cimabue discovered Giotto drawing pictures of his sheep and asked him to become his apprentice. Giotto’s skill was so amazing that once he painted a fly on a painting so well that another artist tried to brush it away, thinking it was real!
Even though many details about Giotto’s life are still unknown, his works remain some of the most loved and studied in the world.
