Meet the Gorillas
Gorillas are big, friendly apes who live in the forests of equatorial Africa. They are the largest living primates, with males growing up to about 5 feet tall and weighing as much as 500 pounds! They have thick, dark fur and strong arms.
Gorillas live in groups called troops. Each troop has one special male called a silverback. He gets his name from the silver hair on his back. The silverback takes care of the group, making sure everyone is safe and happy.
These amazing animals spend their days moving through the trees, eating leaves, fruits, and sometimes insects. At night, they build soft nests from branches and leaves to sleep in. Young gorillas stay very close to their mothers for many years, learning and growing together.
People first learned about gorillas from an explorer named Hanno the Navigator over 2,500 years ago. Later, scientists gave them their name in 1847. Today, gorillas are loved around the world for their gentle nature and clever minds. They can even understand some sign language and use simple tools!
Sadly, gorillas face challenges because their forests are disappearing. Many people work hard to protect these wonderful creatures and their homes. Gorillas remind us of the beauty and intelligence found in the animal world.
