The Beautiful Greek Language

Greek is a very old and special language. It has been spoken for more than 3,400 years! People in Greece and Cyprus speak Greek today. It is one of the oldest languages that is still used.

Why Greek is Important

Many important books were first written in ancient Greek. Famous stories like the poems of Homer and parts of the Christian Bible, called the New Testament, were written in Greek. Greek was also widely spoken around the Mediterranean world in old times.

Where Greek is Spoken

Today, over 13 million people speak Greek. Most live in Greece and Cyprus. Some people in Albania, Italy, and many other countries also speak Greek. Because Greece and Cyprus are part of the European Union, Greek is one of the official languages used there.
