The Gulf of Mexico

The Gulf of Mexico is a big, beautiful part of the ocean. It is like a huge bathtub next to the land. It touches many places, such as the Gulf Coast of the United States and several Mexican states like Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. To the southeast, it is close to Cuba.

The Gulf of Mexico is very wide, about as wide as many football fields put together! It holds a lot of water—enough to fill many, many baths. People use the Gulf for fishing, and it has lots of fish and shrimp that people love to eat. The water in the Gulf also helps make the weather in the United States.

The Gulf of Mexico has a special name because of Mexico. Long ago, people called it different names, but today most call it the Gulf of Mexico. It is a wonderful place full of life and helps many people every day.
