Welcome to Yucatán!
Yucatán is a beautiful state in Mexico. It is part of the 32 federal entities that make up the country. The capital city is called Mérida. Yucatán is located on the Yucatán Peninsula, with the Gulf of Mexico on its northern coast. It shares borders with Campeche to the southwest and Quintana Roo to the southeast.
Ancient Homes
Long ago, before many other people arrived, the Maya civilization lived in Yucatán. The Maya built amazing cities like Chichen Itza, one of the most famous places in the world. Other cities include Izamal, Motul, Mayapan, Ek' Balam, and Ichkanzihóo, which is now where Mérida stands.
A Special Name
The name "Yucatán" has an interesting story. When early Spanish explorers asked the Maya people the name of the place, the people might have said words that sounded like "I don’t understand you" or "flat land." Some stories even say it means "land of yuccas," a plant the Maya grew for food.
