What is a Harvest Festival?
A harvest festival is a happy celebration that happens when people collect their crops from the fields. Because farms and weather are different all over the world, these festivals happen at different times in different places. People enjoy feasts with fresh foods from the harvest.
Fun Traditions Around the World
In Britain, people have celebrated harvests for a very long time. Today, they sing hymns and decorate churches with baskets of fruit and food.
Many other cultures have their own special harvest festivals. The Oromos in Ethiopia celebrate Irreecha. In China, people enjoy the Mid-Autumn Festival.
For Jews, there is a week-long festival called Sukkot. During this time, families build a little temporary house called a sukkah and remember how farmers lived long ago.
Harvest Festivals Today
In the past, people in Britain shared bread made from new wheat with their local church. Early settlers brought these traditions to North America, where famous harvest celebrations took place.
Today, many harvest festivals also help people in places where growing food is hard. Everyone enjoys the fresh food, music, and the feeling of thankfulness for the year's work.
