Who is Haumea?

Haumea is a very important goddess in Hawaiian stories. She is known as the goddess of families and helping new babies come into the world. People in Hawaii love her and remember her in many tales.

Haumea’s Family

Haumea is the sister of the gods Kāne and Kanaloa. She is also the mother of many other gods and goddesses. Two of her famous children are Pele, the goddess of volcanoes, and Hiʻiaka, who loves dancing and nature.

Why We Remember Haumea

Haumea is remembered because she helped people learn about having families. She even made a special drink from a tree to help mothers. Today, a faraway space object is named after her, called Haumea (dwarf planet). It has two small moons named after her daughters!
