What is Hip-Hop?

Hip-hop is a fun type of music that began in the early 1970s in New York City. It started in a place called the Bronx. People would play music and dance at parties.

At these parties, DJs would play special parts of songs called "breaks". These parts were great for dancing! People began to talk or "rap" over the music, speaking in a rhythmic way.

Hip-hop also includes cool things like turntablism, where DJs spin records in special ways, and beatboxing, where people make drum sounds with their mouths.
