Tiny Thai Squids

Idiosepius thailandicus, also called the Thai pygmy squid, is a very tiny type of bobtail squid. These squids are so small that you could hold many in one hand! Females grow to about 10 mm, and males are even smaller, not larger than 7 mm.

These little squids live in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific near Thailand. They like to stay close to shore where there is seaweed and mangrove areas. In these special places, they stick their eggs to things like mangrove roots or the underside of seagrass leaves. They have a special glue gland to help them do this.

Scientists first found this squid in the Gulf of Thailand. We are still learning about where else they might live. Some think they might be found as far south as Indonesia and as far north as Japan. People are careful to protect their homes because seagrass beds can sometimes get damaged.

The IUCN says this squid is Data Deficient because we do not know enough about how many there are or if their numbers are changing. These tiny squids are a fun example of the small but amazing creatures that live in our oceans.
