Japanese writing system

Japanese writing is a special way to write words and ideas in Japan. It uses a mix of different symbols.

There are three main parts to Japanese writing. The first part is called kanji. These are characters that came from old Chinese writing. They help write common words, like nouns such as "river" and "school".

The other two parts are called kana. There are two types of kana: hiragana and katakana. Hiragana is used for everyday Japanese words and grammar. Katakana is used for foreign words, names, and sounds that mimic actions. Both hiragana and katakana came from simplified Chinese characters.

Japanese can be written in two ways. The old way writes words up and down in columns, and the columns go from right to left. The newer way writes words from left to right across the page, like in English.
