Portrait of John Bennet Lawes, an English agricultural scientist, shown in a 19th-century style.

Sir John Bennet Lawes was a kind scientist from England. He lived a long time, from 1814 to 1900, and wanted to help farmers grow better crops.

He started a special farm called Rothamsted Manor, which later became Rothamsted Research. There, he made a special plant food called superphosphate. This helped plants grow stronger and made it easier for farmers to grow more food.

John went to school at Eton College and Brasenose College in Oxford. Even as a student, he loved learning about plants. He worked with a friend, Joseph Henry Gilbert, for many years to help farmers.

Today, his farm is very important for learning about farming. Places like Lawes, Queensland in Australia remember him too. He was a clever man who helped feed many people around the world.
