Joseph Greenberg

Joseph Harold Greenberg was born on May 28, 1915, in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in a Jewish family and loved music. He played the piano and even gave a concert when he was just 14 years old!

Greenberg studied languages and cultures. He went to Columbia College and later learned about the Hausa language in Nigeria. After World War II, he taught at universities and worked at Stanford University in California.

Greenberg is famous for studying how languages work. He looked at how languages are grouped based on their patterns. He helped figure out which languages share common ancestors. His work changed how we understand the connections between different languages around the world. He became president of the African Studies Association and joined important groups like the National Academy of Sciences.
