Lake Constance
Lake Constance is a beautiful lake where Germany, Switzerland, and Austria meet. It sparkles under the sun and touches the lives of many people who live around its shores.
The lake has three parts: the Upper Lake Constance, the Lower Lake Constance, and a part of the Rhine River called the Seerhein. It sits in a special area called the Alpine Foreland. The shores belong to different places, like the German states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, the Swiss cantons of St. Gallen, Thurgau, and Schaffhausen, and the Austrian state of Vorarlberg.
Many towns and villages are nestled along its banks. Some bigger towns include Constance, Friedrichshafen, Bregenz, Lindau, Überlingen, and Kreuzlingen. There are also lovely islands, like Reichenau in the lower lake and Lindau and Mainau in the upper lake.
Even though we call it Lake Constance in English, its German name, Bodensee, comes from a small village named Bodman, right at the very northwest corner of the lake.
Lake Constance is not just water—it’s full of life! You can find many birds, like blackbirds and chaffinch, who make their homes here. The lake has about 45 kinds of fish, including perch, pike, and trout. Some fish, like the Bodenseefelchen, are famous and often enjoyed in local restaurants.
People love to visit Lake Constance for fun activities. You can go swimming, sailing, or even take a ride in a modern zeppelin airship to see the lake from above! There are also many beautiful sights to see, like castles such as Salem Abbey and Meersburg Castle, and lovely islands like Mainau.
The lake is also a place for cultural events. In Bregenz, there are special shows called the Bregenzer Festspiele, where operas and plays are performed on a floating stage. You can also enjoy biking along the "Bodensee-Radweg" path or hiking on many lovely trails.
