Lake Merritt
Lake Merritt is a lovely lake in the middle of Oakland, California. It is right next to Downtown and sits in a big tidal lagoon area. The lake was named after Samuel Merritt, who was Oakland’s mayor a long time ago. He helped change the lagoon into a calm salt-water lake. The lake is surrounded by green parks and city neighborhoods.
Lake Merritt is very special because it was the first official wildlife refuge in the United States, starting in 1870. Since 1963, it has been a National Historic Landmark. People love to walk or jog around the lake on a path that goes all the way around.
There are fun places near the lake too! You can visit the Rotary Nature Center to learn about nature. There is also a small, fairy-tale-themed amusement park called Children’s Fairyland, and a garden area named The Gardens at Lake Merritt. The lake is a wonderful place for birds and many visitors enjoy seeing the birds and plants there.
