What is Leviathan Patera?

Leviathan Patera is a very special volcano on Triton, the biggest moon of the planet Neptune. This is not a regular volcano. It is called a cryovolcano, which means it might burst out cold, icy stuff instead of hot rock.

How Was It Found?

People first saw Leviathan Patera in 1989. A spacecraft called Voyager 2 flew by Neptune and took pictures. That is how scientists discovered this amazing place.

Why Is It Important?

Leviathan Patera is very big—about 80 kilometers or 50 miles wide! It helps us learn about icy volcanoes that are far away from Earth. It is one of the largest of its kind in the whole Solar System!
