The Low Countries

The Low Countries is a beautiful, flat area close to the sea in Europe. It includes three friendly countries: Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. These places are often called the Benelux countries.

Long ago, people lived here and traded many things. The area was very busy and full of life, much like northern Italy. Cities grew big and strong, and people spoke Dutch and French.

The name “Low Countries” means “low lands” because the land is very flat and close to the water. Today, when people talk about the Low Countries, they usually mean Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Sometimes, games between Belgium and the Netherlands are called a Low Countries derby.

The Low Countries have many old stories and history. They were once part of big groups like the Holy Roman Empire and later the Carolingian Empire. Over time, the area changed hands but always stayed a special place for trade and culture.
