The airport first opened its doors in 1938. During a difficult time called the Second World War, it was used by the Royal Air Force. After that, flights started again in 1952.

Luton Airport became very popular in the 1960s for package holidays. People could fly to fun places for their vacations. In 1999, a new and big terminal was opened by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Today, over 16 million passengers use the airport each year!

The airport is home to many airlines, such as easyJet, Ryanair, and Wizz Air. These airlines fly to many places in Europe, and some to Northern Africa and Asia.
