The Makassar Strait is a beautiful waterway between two big islands, Borneo and Sulawesi, in Indonesia. It connects the Celebes Sea in the north to the Java Sea in the south. Many ships travel here when they go through Southeast Asia.

Several rivers, like the Mahakam River, flow into the strait. Important cities and ports near the strait include Balikpapan, Makassar, and Samarinda.

The Makassar Strait is part of the East Indian Archipelago. It was formed a long time ago by movements deep inside the Earth, which created space filled with sand and mud. This area also has lots of oil and natural gas.
