Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was a very special and beautiful building made a long time ago. It was built as a tomb for a leader named Mausolus and his sister-wife Artemisia II in a place called Halicarnassus, which is today known as Bodrum, Turkey.

Two clever architects from Greece, Satyros of Paros and Pythius of Priene, helped design this amazing tomb. It stood very tall, about as high as a big building with many floors, and had lovely decorations made by famous artists. These artists were Leochares from Athens, Bryaxis from Halicarnassus, Scopas of Paros, and Timotheus from Epidaurus or Athens.

Because it was so beautiful, people long ago chose the Mausoleum to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Sadly, earthquakes caused the Mausoleum to fall down many years later. Today, we still remember it, and the word mausoleum means any special tomb built above the ground.

The tomb had many wonderful parts, like tall columns and statues of horses and gods. It was placed on a hill, and people could see it from far away. Even though much of it is gone now, the Mausoleum remains famous for its beauty and the skill of the artists who made it.
