Melbourne is the biggest city in the state of Victoria in Australia. It is near the coast and has lots of people—about 5 million! Melbourne is special because it is the world’s southernmost big city with over one million people.

For thousands of years, Aboriginal Victorians lived in the area around Melbourne. The traditional custodians are the Boonwurrung, Woiwurrung, and Wurundjeri peoples. In 1835, settlers came and started the city. It grew quickly during the Victorian gold rush in the 1850s.

Today, Melbourne is famous for its culture and sports. People love to watch Australian rules football and visit art museums. The city has famous places like the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Royal Exhibition Building. Melbourne holds big events such as the Australian Grand Prix and the Australian Open tennis tournament.
