Melon-headed Whale

The melon-headed whale is a special kind of toothed whale that lives far out in the ocean. These whales have a unique head shape that looks like a melon, which is how they got their name. They are also called electra dolphins or little killer whales, but they are gentle animals that love to travel in big groups.

These whales live in warm waters all around the world, from France to the Philippines. They usually stay far from land, but sometimes they come close to islands like Hawaiʻi. They eat fish and squid, and they love to play together in large groups. Scientists still have much to learn about these interesting whales.

Melon-headed whales can grow up to about 9 feet long and can live for many years. They are dark gray with some lighter patches. Even though they are not often seen, they are important to scientists who study ocean life. These whales remind us how much we still have to discover about the deep sea.
