What is NeXTSTEP?

NeXTSTEP was a special kind of operating system. An operating system is like the boss of a computer, helping it run programs and do many things at once. NeXTSTEP was made by a company called NeXT, which was started by Steve Jobs.

Where Did It Come From?

NeXTSTEP was created in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It used ideas from two important systems: the Mach kernel and UNIX. First, it ran on NeXT’s own computers, like the NeXT Computer, and later it could run on many other types of computers too.

Why Do We Remember It?

Even though NeXTSTEP wasn’t very popular when it came out, it had some cool ideas. It helped make early versions of important software, like the first web browser. In 1996, Apple Inc. bought NeXT. They used parts of NeXTSTEP to build the new macOS, which is the operating system used in Apple computers today. Many of the ideas from NeXTSTEP are still used in computers now, making them easier and more fun to use for everyone.
