Welcome to Oldenburg
Oldenburg is a lovely city in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is a special kind of city called an independent city, which means it stands on its own. Oldenburg is nestled between bigger cities like Bremen to the east and Groningen in the Netherlands to the west. It sits near two rivers, the Hunte and the Haaren, making it a peaceful spot.
Long ago, Oldenburg was important because it was where the House of Oldenburg began. Before 1918, it was the main city for the rulers of the monarchs of Oldenburg. Today, about 176,000 people call Oldenburg home.
A Little History
People have lived in Oldenburg since the 8th century! The first record of the city, from 1108, calls it Aldenburg. It was a busy place because it had a crossing over the Hunte river. In the 1600s, Oldenburg was a rich town, but faced challenges like diseases and fires. Later, buildings were rebuilt in a beautiful style called neoclassicist.
Fun Things to See
Oldenburg has many places to explore! You can visit Schloss Oldenburg, a museum inside a grand old castle. The city also has a lovely theatre called the Oldenburg State Theatre. In the summer, there are free music shows and festivals, and in September, you can enjoy the Oldenburg International Film Festival. The city centre is full of shops and has a special area called “Hundehütten” with unique houses.
