Who Was Philip Galle?

Philip Galle was a Dutch publisher who lived a long time ago, from 1537 to 1612. He was born in Haarlem in the Netherlands. Philip loved making beautiful pictures and sharing them with many people.

Making Art for Everyone

Philip worked as a engraver, which means he made detailed images for prints. He made copies of famous paintings so more people could see them. Thanks to Philip’s work, many beautiful pieces of art could be shared with everyone.

A Busy Life

Philip started his own printing business in Haarlem in 1563. Later, he moved to Antwerp, where he became very successful. He taught many students who also became famous artists. Philip’s family, including his five children, helped keep his business going for many years.
