The President of Mexico

The president of Mexico is the leader of the country. This important job helps guide the government and make big decisions for Mexico. The president is also the head of the country's armed forces.

The job of president was first created a long time ago, in 1824. Today, the president is Claudia Sheinbaum, who started working in this role on October 1, 2024.

One special rule in Mexico is that presidents can only serve for one term of six years. This is called a sexenio. This rule helps make sure no one person stays in charge for too long.

To become president, a person must be born in Mexico, be at least 35 years old, and have lived in Mexico for many years. They also cannot be working in the military or certain government jobs close to the election.

People in Mexico vote for the president every six years. The person with the most votes wins, even if it is not more than half of all votes.

The president works in the National Palace in Mexico City. This big building has a long history and is where the president lives and works.

When a new president starts, they make a special promise to follow the country's rules and help everyone in Mexico. They wear a special sash with the colors of the Mexican flag during important events.
