What Is Puberty?

Puberty is the time when a child's body changes into an adult body. It is a special part of growing up. During puberty, boys and girls notice many new changes in their bodies.

When Does Puberty Start?

Girls usually start puberty around age 10½ and finish by ages 15–17. Boys start a little later, around ages 11½–12, and finish by ages 16–17. Everyone grows at their own pace, and that is okay.

Fun Changes in Boys and Girls

Boys and girls have some different changes during puberty. Boys may grow deeper voices and more muscle. Girls may grow breasts and get ready for future families. Both boys and girls grow taller and get hair in new places, like under their arms.

These changes help prepare them for becoming adults. Puberty is a normal and important part of growing up.
