Same-Sex Marriage in Chile

Chile is a beautiful country in South America. In March 2022, Chile made a big change. For the first time, people who love each other and are the same sex could get married, just like couples who are not the same sex.

Before this, same-sex couples in Chile could join in something called a civil union. This was like a special agreement, but it was not exactly the same as marriage. Civil unions started in October 2015. They let couples share some rights, like making medical decisions for each other, but not all rights that married couples had.

Many people in Chile worked hard to make same-sex marriage possible. In 2021, the leader of Chile, President Sebastián Piñera, said his government would support it. The Chilean Senate and the Chamber of Deputies voted to allow it. On March 10, 2022, the first same-sex marriages happened in Santiago.

People in Chile have different feelings about same-sex marriage. Some groups support it very much, while others do not. But more and more people in Chile now support it. In 2022, 82% of people said they agreed with same-sex marriage. This shows that many people in Chile think love is important, no matter who you love.
