Same-Sex Marriage
Same-sex marriage is when two people of the same gender get married. Many countries around the world now allow this. It helps families and gives couples the same rights as other married couples.
Thailand recently became one of the latest places to allow same-sex marriage. In places where it is allowed, couples can often adopt children, too.
Some countries, like Nigeria and Russia, do not support same-sex marriage. But in many parts of the world, people are working to make sure everyone can get married, no matter who they love.
In Europe, people have been marrying people of the same sex since the 1970s. The first law allowing same-sex marriage was passed in the Netherlands in 2001. Since then, many more countries have followed.
Allowing same-sex marriage helps people and families. It means couples can have the same legal rights as everyone else. Many groups, like human rights and civil rights groups, support same-sex marriage.
Some people use words like marriage equality or equal marriage to talk about this idea. They want same-sex couples to have the same rights as opposite-sex couples.
Over time, many dictionaries have updated their definitions of marriage to include same-sex couples. This helps make sure everyone is treated fairly, no matter who they love.
In some places, like parts of Kenya and Nigeria, women sometimes marry each other. This usually happens to keep family property together, not for love. It is a special way to help families stay strong.
Some Christian groups and Jewish groups also support same-sex marriage. They believe in treating everyone with kindness and respect.
Studies show that children with two parents—whether both moms, both dads, or a mom and dad—are healthy and happy. Allowing same-sex couples to marry helps families and children feel more supported.
Most places that allow same-sex marriage also let these couples adopt children. This helps many children find loving homes.
Rules about marriage can be tricky for transgender people. But many places now let people change their legal gender, making it easier for them to marry.
Many people around the world support same-sex marriage. Younger people, especially those under 35, often support it more than older people. This shows that more people are starting to accept it.
Same-sex marriage is now allowed in many countries, including Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Denmark, Ecuador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Uruguay.
Some countries are thinking about allowing same-sex marriage soon. Others have special ways for couples to get legal rights, like civil unions.
Civil unions give couples many of the same benefits as married people. Countries like Bolivia, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Monaco, Montenegro, and San Marino have these arrangements.
Some Christian groups, like progressive Christian churches, support same-sex marriage. Networks such as the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists, Ecumenical Catholic Church, and Metropolitan Community Church also support it.
In Judaism, groups like Reconstructionist Judaism, the World Council of Synagogues, and the World Union for Progressive Judaism support marriages between people of the same gender.
Studies from universities and medical centers show that families with same-sex parents are just as strong and caring as any other families. Allowing same-sex marriage helps these families feel more secure and supported.
Different places have different ideas about same-sex marriage. Some welcome it, while others have rules against it. People who support it believe it helps families and children. Others think the government should not decide who can marry.
In many countries, more and more people, especially younger ones, support same-sex marriage. This shows that acceptance is growing around the world.
