Same-sex marriage in Ecuador

Same-sex marriage became legal in Ecuador on July 8, 2019. This means two people who love each other, no matter if they are both men or both women, can get married. This change happened because the Constitutional Court said it was fair and right.

Ecuador was the fifth country in South America to allow same-sex marriage. Before Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Colombia had already allowed it.

Even though same-sex couples can get married, there is one rule that is different. Only couples with one man and one woman can adopt children. But same-sex couples can have a special kind of partnership called a civil union, which gives them many of the same rights as married couples.

Many people in Ecuador supported this change, especially younger people. Over time, more and more couples have been able to share their love and commitment through marriage.
