Same-sex marriage in Luxembourg
Luxembourg is a small country in Europe where people can get married, no matter if they are a man and a woman or two men or two women. This became possible on January 1, 2015. Before that, same-sex couples could have a special partnership, but it was not the same as marriage.
Many people in Luxembourg think it is important that everyone can get married. In 2014, the Chamber of Deputies voted to change the law, and the Grand Duke Henri signed it. Now, same-sex couples can get all the same rights as married couples, like adopting children.
Some people in Luxembourg wanted same-sex marriage for a long time. In 1995, a person named Lydie Err talked about special agreements for same-sex couples. Later, in 2004, the country made a new kind of partnership. But people kept talking and working until same-sex marriage became real in 2015.
In 2021, the royal family said that royal members could marry someone of the same sex and still keep their titles. This made many people happy.
Most people in Luxembourg now support same-sex marriage. Surveys show that many believe everyone should be able to get married, no matter who they love.
