Same-Sex Marriage in Norway
In Norway, people who love each other can get married, no matter if they are a man and a woman, or two men or two women. This friendly rule started on January 1, 2009.
The Storting, which is Norway’s parliament, made this change possible in June 2008. Norway was an important leader. It was the first Scandinavian country and the sixth in the whole world to allow same-sex marriage.
Before 2009, same-sex couples could have something called registered partnerships. These gave couples almost all the same rights as married couples. Norway was also one of the first countries to create this option, after Denmark.
Many people in Norway support same-sex marriage. In 2024, a wedding website chose Norway as the best place in the world for same-sex couples to get married. This shows how welcome everyone is in Norway who wants to celebrate love and commitment together.
