Same-sex marriage in Portugal
In Portugal, two people who love each other can get married, no matter if they are both girls or both boys. This became true on June 5, 2010.
The idea started with the leader of the country, Prime Minister José Sócrates. He wanted to make sure everyone could marry the person they love. Many people talked about it, and in February 2010, the rules were changed to allow same-sex marriage.
The biggest court in Portugal checked the new rule and said it was okay. Then, the president, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, signed it to make it a law. Portugal was the sixth country in Europe to let same-sex couples marry.
Even though some groups did not agree, most people in Portugal now think it is a good idea. By 2023, 81% of people supported same-sex marriage. This shows that many people in Portugal believe love is love, no matter who you love.
