Same-Sex Marriage in Sweden

Sweden is a country in Europe where everyone can get married, no matter if they are a man or a woman. This became true on May 1, 2009. The Riksdag, which is Sweden's parliament, changed the law to make this happen. Sweden was one of the first places in the world to allow same-sex marriages.

Before 2009, same-sex couples in Sweden could have something called registered partnerships. These gave them many of the same rights as married couples. But after the law changed, couples could get married instead. In October 2009, the Church of Sweden also said that priests could perform same-sex marriage ceremonies in churches.

Many people in Sweden support same-sex marriage. By 2023, about 92% of Swedes thought everyone should be able to marry the person they love. This shows how important equality is to people in Sweden.

In 2021, Sweden even said that members of the royal family could marry someone of the same gender without losing their royal titles. This made things fair for everyone in the royal family.

Same-sex marriage helps couples feel happy and respected, just like other couples. It is a special part of life in Sweden today.
