Same-Sex Marriage in Switzerland

In Switzerland, two people who love each other can get married, no matter if they are a man and a woman, or two men, or two women. This became possible on 1 July 2022.

Before this, same-sex couples could have something called a registered partnership. This gave them many rights, but not all. Now, same-sex couples can get married like any other couple.

People in Switzerland voted on this idea. In 2021, many people said "yes" to allowing same-sex marriage. This made Switzerland one of the countries in Europe where same-sex couples can marry.

Some special places in Switzerland, like Zurich and Geneva, had their own rules to help couples who live together but are not married. These rules give couples some of the same rights as married couples.

Now, same-sex couples in Switzerland can get married, adopt children, and have the same rights as other married couples. Many people in Switzerland support this idea, and it has become a normal part of life there.
