Sandy’s Early Days

Long ago, groups like the Paiute, Shoshone, and Bannock people traveled through the Sandy area. They would go between Utah Lake in the winter and Bear Lake in the summer.

People began to live in Sandy in the 1860s. It started with just a small area near the Jordan River. Some think the city was named after the sandy soil, or maybe after a man named Alexander “Sandy” Kinghorn who helped build a train line there.

In the early days, Sandy grew because of silver mining in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Trains helped connect Sandy to Salt Lake City. In 1893, Sandy became an official town. It grew slowly at first but later became a busy place with homes, schools, and shops.

You can drive on Interstate 15 or take a bus around the city. The Utah Transit Authority runs buses and even a train called TRAX light rail that stops at four stations in Sandy.

Many interesting people have lived in Sandy, like famous soccer players and actors. Sandy also has its own newspaper, the Sandy City Journal, to share news with everyone.
