The Sierra Madre Oriental is a beautiful mountain range in northeastern Mexico. It is part of the American Cordillera, a long chain of mountains that stretch along the western side of North America.
The Sierra Madre Oriental stretches for about 1,000 kilometres (620 miles). It starts at the Rio Grande, where Coahuila meets Texas, and runs south through several states. To the east of these mountains lies the Gulf Coastal Plain, and to the west is the Mexican Plateau.
The mountains have rocky peaks, deep canyons, and lots of different wildlife. Some plants and animals live only here, making it a special place for nature lovers and scientists.
The tallest mountain in the Sierra Madre Oriental is Cerro El Potosí. It is 3,721 metres (12,208 feet) above sea level and is in the state of Nuevo León.
The Sierra Madre Oriental has special forests of pine and oak trees at higher elevations. On the lower slopes, you can find other kinds of forests and deserts, each with its own unique plants and animals. Some of these forests are protected in parks to keep them safe for the future.
