Sky Father

In many old stories from different places, there is a special idea called the sky father. This is a powerful sky god who is often thought of as a “father” to many other gods. Sometimes, this sky father is also the King of the Gods.

The idea of a sky father appears in many polytheistic religions. For example, in ancient Rome, the sky father was called Jupiter. In Greece, he was called Zeus. Both of these names come from an even older shared root, *Dyēus Ph₂tḗr, showing how many cultures have similar ideas about powerful sky gods.

Often, the sky father is paired with an “earth mother”. This shows a balance between the sky and the earth. For example, in Maori stories, the sky father is Ranginui and the earth mother is Papatūānuku.

The idea of a sky father is very common in Indo-European mythology. But not all cultures imagine their world this way. In ancient Egypt, the sky was represented by a goddess named Nut, while the earth was a male god named Geb. This shows that while the sky father is a popular idea, it is not the only way people think about the world around them.

The sky father is a fun idea to learn about because it shows how different cultures tell stories about the world in their own special ways.
