What is a Soldier?
A soldier is a person who is part of an army. Soldiers help keep their country safe and bring peace. They can be people who join because they are asked to, called conscripted, or they can choose to join because they want to, called volunteers.
Soldiers have many different jobs. Some might drive special vehicles, while others help keep order. Each job has its own name, like commando or artilleryman. Over time, new jobs appear as new tools and ways of working develop.
Why Do People Become Soldiers?
People become soldiers in different ways. Sometimes, rules say certain people must join. This is called "conscription". Other times, people choose to join, or "enlist". They might join to help their homeland or because they believe in an important cause.
After serving for many years, soldiers can receive a pension when they retire.
Soldiers in Stories
For a long time, soldiers have been part of stories in songs, books, plays, movies, and more. These stories often show soldiers as brave and helpful. Even in children's games and songs, soldiers can appear, teaching us about courage and teamwork.
