Twelfth Night
Twelfth Night, or What You Will is a happy and funny play by William Shakespeare. It was written a long time ago, around 1601–1602, for a special holiday called Twelfth Night. This holiday ends the Christmas season.
The story is about twins, Viola and Sebastian, who get separated during a shipwreck. Viola pretends to be a boy named Cesario and works for a kind man named Duke Orsino. Viola falls in love with Orsino, but Orsino loves another person named Olivia. When Olivia meets Viola (who is pretending to be Cesario), Olivia thinks Viola is a boy and falls in love with her too!
The play has many happy moments, with music and jokes. It was first performed on February 2, 1602 and later published in a book called the First Folio. The story happens in a magical place called Illyria, which was an old area along the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Today, this place includes parts of modern-day Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Albania.
One of the cities in Illyria was the Republic of Ragusa, which is now called Dubrovnik in Croatia. The play has many fun characters, like Malvolio, a proud servant, and Maria, a kind lady. There is also a jester named Feste who sings happy songs.
At the end of the play, everyone finds true love and the twins are reunited. The story ends with a happy song, making it a fun and joyful play for everyone to enjoy.
