The Union of South Africa

The Union of South Africa was a country in southern Africa from 1910 to 1961. It was made when four areas joined together: the Cape, Natal, Transvaal, and Orange River.

Pretoria was where the government worked, Cape Town was where the parliament met, and Bloemfontein was where the highest court was located.

The Union of South Africa was first a part of the British Empire. Later, it became a full member of the Commonwealth. In 1961, the country became a republic and left the Commonwealth.

People lived in four main areas called provinces. Here is a simple map of those provinces:

The Union of South Africa had a special flag and coat of arms that people saw in many places. It was an important time for the country as it grew and changed.
