United Nations Environment Programme
The United Nations Environment Programme, often called UNEP, helps take care of our planet. It works with many countries to solve important environmental problems. UNEP was started in 1972 after a big meeting in Stockholm, Sweden. The first leader was Maurice Strong from Canada.
UNEP’s main office is in Nairobi, Kenya, making it the first big UN office in the Global South. It shares science, helps find solutions, and supports green growth. UNEP also creates important agreements between countries to protect the environment.
UNEP helps the world reach the Sustainable Development Goals. It works on issues like climate change, protecting oceans and land ecosystems, and supporting green economies. UNEP also started the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change with the World Meteorological Organization to study climate change.
UNEP gives special awards to people who do great work for the environment, like the Champions of the Earth. It also helps young people through programs like Tunza. UNEP has helped many countries start solar power projects, making clean energy more available for everyone.
