West Side Highway
What Is the West Side Highway?
The West Side Highway is a road in New York City. It runs along the Hudson River on the west side of Manhattan. Its official name is the Joe DiMaggio Highway, after a famous New York Yankees player.
A Road by the River
The highway is about 5 miles long. It starts near Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan. It goes north to West 72nd Street, where it becomes the Henry Hudson Parkway. Most of the road is at ground level, so cars can drive right along the water.
The highway passes many piers and nice places to visit. It goes by the Javits Center and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Some parts of the road have names like West Street, Eleventh Avenue, and Twelfth Avenue.
Changes Over Time
Long ago, a tall road called the West Side Elevated Highway stood on the west side of Manhattan. It was closed in 1973 because it had not been well cared for. Later, a new road took its place, and it was finished by 2001.
Some people wanted the highway to be moved and buried. Others wanted to keep it. In the end, the road stayed where it was, and the area around it grew greener.
A New Park Next Door
In 1998, a new park was created next to the highway. It is called Hudson River Park. The park covers 550 acres, and it is the biggest park built in the city since Central Park.
A bike path runs along the highway, so people can ride bikes by the river. Many families enjoy walking and biking there.
